Our client is looking for a SQL Server DBA to work within the IT team to deliver the IT Roadmap, supporting and delivering change control for operational, client and regulatory changes.
The SQL Server DBA will have a split responsibility between SQL Server DBA and AWS RDS technologies.
The AWS RDS side of the role is supporting all AWS Databases currently available within the company.
The SQL Server DBA will play an important role in the operations, design and development of the cloud offering. You will bring your experience to the current talented Technology function to further evolve the technical capabilities of our organization, drive improvements by implementing key technologies for monitoring and automation.
The client looks first and foremost for a person who can work at pace and flexibly with a small team of like-minded technology professionals.
Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years’ commercial experience within a SQL DBA, SQL Server DBA role
- Must have some experience of AWS RDS / Relational Database Services
SQL
SQL Server DBA Requirements & Skills
- Extensive knowledge of SQL and SQL server tools
- Experience in Database Performance, Development and Maintenance
- In-depth understanding of database security, backup and recovery, and performance monitoring requirements
- Familiarity with relational and dimensional data modelling
- Extensive knowledge in database design, implementation, and conversion
- Knowledge of PowerShell and Unix shell scripting
- Experience with SSAS, SSIS, and SSRS
- A solid mathematics and statistical skills
- Working knowledge of Linux and Windows Server infrastructures
- Extensive knowledge of database technologies (MySQL, MS SQL, PostgreSQL Oracle, MongoDB)
- Prior experience with cloud services (AWS, Microsoft Azure)
AWS
- Solid experience in database administration focusing on AWS database technologies
- Good understanding of development tools: source code control software, automated build, automated testing and JIRA.
- In depth understanding of AWS database services
- In depth knowledge in SQL and other database technologies
- Strong problem solving and communication skills
- Experience in database optimisation, backup and recovery strategies
- High level of integrity and respect for confidentiality, understanding data sensitivity
Desirable:
- Microsoft/AWS certifications
- Some .Net experience in VB.NET would be welcome but not essential
The Role:
SQL Server DBA Responsibilities-
- Create new Microsoft SQL Server instances and configure them.
- In charge of database backup and recovery methods, database access security and integrity, physical data storage design, and data storage administration.
- Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) management, ensuring efficient processes for storing directory data and ensuring data is available to network users and administrators.
- Assists in the selection of a database management system and the maintenance of database performance.
- Participate in continuous process improvement.
- Download and install SQL Server service packs and updates.
- Configure and maintain SQL Security controls.
- Make recommendations for system architecture per Microsoft SQL Server best practices.
- Cost management of databases and consolidation / optimisation.
- Manage database backup and recovery, as well as disaster recovery planning, in coordination with the IT manager and System Engineer.
- Create, change, and improve SQL Server Agent tasks and maintenance plans.
- Proactively monitor SQL Server maintenance tasks, troubleshoot failed processes, and address issues as soon as possible.
- Troubleshoot application sluggishness and poor performance.
- In charge of SQL query tuning.
- In charge of database migrations and server updates.
- Create documentation and training for routine database administration activities, as well as train server operations employees on them.
- In charge of SQL Server reporting, as well as authoring and modifying SQL Server Reporting Services reports.
- Integrate SQL Server with corporate applications.
- T-SQL (Transact-SQL) Programming Perform any extra responsibilities that are allocated to you.
